UofT Medical School 2014 Open house The Faculty of Medicine Open House composed of semi-annual events: the Fall Open House event is targeted at prospective medical students, and the Spring Open House event at students interested in learning more about the health professions in general. These events are student-led initiatives with support from the Medical Society and the Office of Admissions. The 2014 Fall Open House event aims to show students what it is like to be in medical school, helping them to decide whether UofT, or even medical school is a good fit for them. The all-day event encompasses several activities. The morning features a keynote speech by Dr. Ritika Goel on physician advocacy; as well as talks from Dr. Marcus Law, Deputy Preclerkship Director and Dr. Robert Chen, Acting Associate Dean, Physician Scientist Training on MD and MD/PhD curricula and program structure. Over lunch, attendees will have a chance to talk to Admissions representatives, Office of Health Professions Student Affairs (OHPSA) representatives, as well as current pre-clerkship medical students. The afternoon will feature a student-developed “seminar”, in which aspects of the current curriculum will be demonstrated to prospective students in the form of an interactive case study. This event will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2014. Registration for the event will be open until October 24 at http://uoft.me/MD-Recruitment-Events . The Spring Open House event has developed into a truly interprofessional affair. Representatives from the Faculties of Nursing and Pharmacy, as well as the Departments of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Medical Radiation Science, and the Physician Assistant program have been involved in the event in the past. This is an opportunity for undergraduate and high school students to explore UofT programs leading to careers in the health professions. Past events have included a keynote address by an interprofessional team, a student panel, as well as workshops. This event is anticipated to occur in early June 2015. About the co-ordinators: Karen Wong and Jane Liao are second year medical students at the University of Toronto. They are eager to share their love for UofT Medicine with prospective students, and very excited to bring something new to the Open House events!
